March of the Penguins

Hi Guys and Girls!

I don't know if you have ever seen "The March of The Penguins". There are 1,000's of them. Regardless of the severe icy conditions they are out there doing what they need to do.

Well, every Sunday is an opportunity for "The March of The Christians" - out of their homes; into cars, taxis, buses, mini buses, or even walking, but all making their way to church.

This is my challenge to you: make the month of March  "A Time to March" - in other words, pull out all the stops and make your way to church. To encourage this we are putting on a series of specials as follows:

I will be speaking on Sunday mornings during March when I will be speaking on things like "Sensing God in the Storm", "Handling Pressure", "Turning Tragedy into Victory" etc.

For a series of Sunday Night Specials we have the following speakers:

 1st March    Jonathan
  8th               Craig Seawright
15th               John Legge (Prayer for Healing and Ministry)
22nd              Yvonne O'Grady (Charis Bible College) Mother's Day Special
29th               Gareth Murphy

Others will be involved in these services.

One more special is the Dedication Service for Baby Seth McCurley. On Mother's Day Sunday, at the morning service, we will be celebrating with Jason and Alison as we give thanks to the Lord for Baby Seth and pray God's continued blessing upon him and upon them as a family. God is so good.

So come on. Let's turn the month of March into "The March of the Christians" by doing our part at New Life.

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

Difference between men and women

Is there still a sense of humour in New Life? I really hope there is or as a Pastor I'm in serious trouble.

Forgetting about the obvious, here are some noted differences between men and women that are quite revealing:

NICKNAMES:
  • If Laura, Kate and Sarah go out for lunch, they will call each other Laura, Kate and Sarah.
  • If Mike, Dave and John go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as Fat Boy, Godzilla and Four-eyes and no one will take offence.
EATING OUT:
  • When the bill arrives, Mike, Dave and John will each throw in £20, even though it's only for £52.50. None of them will look for anything smaller and none will want change back.
  • When the girls get their bill, it's as much small change they can find in their purse. They might leave £2 between them!
MONEY:
  • A man will pay £2 for a £1 item he needs.
  • A woman will pay £1 for a £2 item she doesn't need, but it's on sale!
BATHROOMS:
  • A man has six items in his bathroom: toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel .
  • The average number of items in the typical woman's bathroom is 337. A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items.
DRESSING UP:
  • A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the trash, answer the phone, read a book, and get the mail.
  • A man will only dress up for weddings and funerals.
ARGUMENTS:
  • A woman has the last word in any argument.
  • Anything a man (or another woman) says after that is the beginning of a new argument.
SUCCESS:
  • A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend.
  • A successful woman is one who can find such a man.
MARRIAGE:
  • A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't.
  • A man marries a woman expecting she won't change, but she does.

From William Wade

Thought I should pass this on from our guest speaker last night:

Hi Jack,

I'm still buzzing after last night. Could you pass on to the worship team that me, Gerritt, Stevie and Julie were really touched by the worship, and it was clear that they were real worshippers.

It was so good to have been a part of last night. I know I've known about your work on the Road for years now, and having you over to Germany and reading your books have only reinforced my sense of respect for what you're doing. But actually being there last night so impressed me in the sense of faithfulness you've shown in following the call of God. For someone just really starting out in trying to do something for God, you're a real role model of commitment to the cause of Jesus.

Thanks so much for the gift as well - a real blessing when I got home.

Keep us updated on how everything goes - you're doing a great work!!

All the best for now, and thanks again for last night.
William.

Weekly Contact 23 Feb. 2009

I hope you all had a good weekend and are enjoying a good start to the new week. For those who were at church yesterday, I know you enjoyed good times of praise, worship and teaching, and I hope fellowship as well. We only have this one day in the week to come together in this manner, so it's important we make the most of it. I spoke with a married couple in their thirties after last night's service. They are not Christians, but were totally bowled over by the set-up and the content of the service. This is encouraging, but we all know that church is more than set-up and content; it's about relationship; and we all know that Christian relationships work four ways: Me to God and God to me; me to you and you to me. Yet if only one of these four ways breaks down, we can have all the set-up and all the content that impresses visitors, but like Solomon said, "It's all but vanity!"

Some "Christians" can break relationships, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Some can choose to step outside of Christian relationships thinking they are better off on their own, and when they do so they think they know better than God, because it was God who put us together! Yet as a pastor I would much rather never preach another sermon or never sing another worship song than break relationship with a fellow Christian.

Sunday Morning: Pastor John was back with us after being in the US and having helped out at APA for two weeks. He brought an excellent word  on "The Christian God wants us to be".  In this message he stated it is important we remain bonded in the love of God, and that we do not become contaminated by the spirit of this world, but are impacted by the Spirit of Christ.

In Romans 12 there are several principles for life. John highlighted that regardless of disagreements, we need to unite in love. He explained that the spirit you carry is the spirit you impart. He further challenged us to not be Christian in name only, but in practicality where we think more highly of others than we do of self (man this is tough - my words - but Jesus did it, and it is achievable!) He then quoted Peter who instructed us to be of one mind; to be careful with our words and to seek peace.

A special presentation: was made to me and Kathleen; John and Ruth; Jonathan and Gemma. Please know that this was totally unexpected, and never will be, yet it was very much appreciated. On behalf of each person, please accept our sincere thanks for this demonstration of your love and appreciation for our ministry and service among you.

Sunday night. William Wade was our guest speaker. He spoke on "The Greatest Wrestling Match in the Bible" Gen. 32. 22-31. Jacob had always been a winner, but in Gen. 32 he was to face his greatest test when he faced God who had picked this moment for Jacob, a moment of solitude; not that he was lonely, but was alone in his circumstances. In that moment  of solitude he was to experience his greatest encounter with God.

What went through his mind? Total surprise! Yet he was determined not to quit, but was willing to fight through and to fight all night for the blessing of God. The purpose of this encounter, of this situation, was not only to draw something out of Jacob, but to get something into him. This was part of the process for God to get the best out of Jacob. The situations we face as Christians is similarly part the process, we all go through, for God to get the best out of us.

William shared some of his life stories. One was of a Championship fight. During the first round he took a hard blow to the side of the head that almost ended the fight, but he was saved by the bell. He was hit so hard he did not want to come out for the second round, but his trainer said to him "You won the round, now get in there and win the fight". William explained that when someone knows your situation better than you do, it pays to listen.

As God asked Jacob, so William asked us, What is your name? What is your identity? How do you see yourself? How does the world see you? Does it really measure up to God's identity? The world identifies us less than God; it puts us down, but as God looks upon us he sees missionaries, preachers, worship leaders, politicians; etc, but most important he sees us as "Children of God". The final thing that Jacob did was to surrender to God, and in the words of William Booth, the greatest thing we can is to surrender to God.

Thanks for visiting and sharing with us William.

Special Announcement. I announced yesterday at both services that, although we are still confident of securing the funds for the refurbishment of the new building, because of certain conditions the confirmation of the funds is put back to the end of April. As a Leadership we agreed that we should not be waiting any longer, but that New Life needs to move this year. So at the moment we are working on costs and will up with fundraising ideas and a possible time to move that we will share with you in the coming weeks. We are also open to suggestions.

Thursday Night: Last Thursday night was great. Well done Craig and the FIST Team. Next Thursday night will be BREAKOUT. We will focus on prayer regarding our planned move to the new building.

The answer to last week's question: I know many of you said you would light the candle first, but like a few others rightly said, I would light the match first!

This week's question: There was a very very tall coconut tree and there were four animals, a lion, a chimpanzee, a giraffe, and a squirrel. They all decided to compete to see who was the fastest to get a banana off the tree. Who do you think would win?

This week's Bible verse: Proverbs 10:8. "The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin".

Again I finish by encouraging you, as Hezeki'ah did, to "come to the House of the Lord" (we meet on Sunday's!)

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

Reminder Special Announcement

Just reminding you about our our special guest speaker this coming Sunday night at 6.45.

William is originally from Greenisland, but has been ministering in Germany for several years.

He became a Christian shortly after being expelled from school. He went on to serve 7 years in the British Army where he was undefeated in the ring and held the Regimental boxing title at Welterweight and Light Middleweight.

He served 7 years as a missionary to British soldiers in Germany with SASRA, from 2001 - 2008, and last August began as an Associate Pastor at the International Baptist Church in Dusseldorf, in charge of small groups and evangelism.

William is married to Tulsi. They have 2 daughters, Micah (3) and Esme (6 months). William believes the answer to life is Jesus, and the answer to football is Liverpool! He truly is a man after Pastor Jack's heart!

I have ministered with William twice in Germany; once at an old Hitler Training camp for Junior Officers, now owned by the British Army; and once at the International Baptist Church special weekend in Dusseldorf. William is a great guy. You will really appreciate his ministry. He was actually saved through Tommy Latimer's ministry in Greenisland.

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

FIST My Response

I cannot delete the women who are reading this message, much as I would love to! - Hey! I'm only joking!!! Anyway, I was delighted to see the number of men who were allowed out and who made it along to FIST last night. By the time I got there all of the KFC was well and truly gone. In fact there were so many bones on the tables and in the KFC buckets it reminded me of Ezekiel 37 and the valley of dry bones. The only difference was that flesh did not return to the chickens!

I just want to say well done to the FIST Team. The decor was very manly; the worship was excellent as we stood as men and raised our voices together in our worship to God; and the message that Craig Seawright brought was very direct yet sensitive enough to enable each man to be comfortable with subject. Well done for once again putting on an excellent  night. I received the following two comments last night via email after the meeting at FIST. One from one of the women of New Life and the other from one of the men. They will remain unanimous! But what they said was:

The Woman: "LOL!!!! never mind allowing him out, I`m kicking him out!!!!!lol  keep him as long as u want!!!!!lol hope u all have a good nite!!!!!!!" The men who were there last night will appreciate this!

The Man: I thought tonight was fantastic and thought Craig done a fantastic job on what can be a very tricky subject, I am really pleased to be part of new life and I am also enjoying getting to know everybody more, esp Glynn who made me feel very welcome the last couple of sunday nights, Couldn't think of a better church to be part of to learn the word of god and help me learn so much more.

This all only works whenever we ALL play OUR part to promote fellowship and friendship. Thanks for playing YOUR part.

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

Weekly Contact 16 Feb. 2009

The House of the Lord is mentioned over 200 times in the Bible. It is clearly seen as a specific place where the people of God were encouraged to meet with each other and to meet with God. In 2 Chronicles 30:1 we read, "Hezeki'ah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also to E'phraim and Manas'seh, that they should come to the House of the Lord."

Hezeki'ah did not have email, but he took the time to write letters to encourage people to get out to the House of the Lord. Well, we do have email and I am using mine to write and to invite people to come to the House of the Lord, which for us today is New Life City Church.

Praise God for the good attendance yesterday at both services. We had another great day together.

Sunday morning: Following on from last week's message "When God Says No", this week's message was "When God Says Yes". Sometimes God says "No", but more often he says "Yes".

God might have said "No" to Paul going into Asia and he might have said "No" to the removal of Paul's 'Thorn in the flesh' (whatever that was!), but he did say "Yes" to Paul the day he saved him. He said yes to Paul when he was sent out by the church as an Apostle to the Gentiles. He said yes to Paul when he prayed for a girl possessed by demonic spirits and she was healed. He said yes to Paul when he prayed for a young man to be raised to life, who had fallen and died. He said yes to Paul going into Europe and to preaching the Gospel in Philippi. He later said yes to Paul to finally go into Asia.

We looked at Acts 10 and we saw that this chapter begins with a man in prayer; half way through the chapter there is another man in prayer; by the end of the chapter both these men are together, and the Holy Spirit is moving upon them and those who had gathered with them. These men were Cornelius, a Gentile, and Peter, a Jew. God said "Yes" to both of them and in so doing he was saying "Yes" to Gentiles and to Jews alike.

We saw that God's "No" should also be our no, and that his "Yes" should be our yes.

Sunday night: Continuing with facing the giants, the message was "Facing the Giant of Lies". We saw that we all face this Giant who confronts on three fronts:

1. He encourages us to believe lies: That is to reject truth and replace it with a lie (e.g. evolution)
2. He encourages us to tell lies: politicians are good at this, but Christians are not immune!
3. He encourages us to live a lie: to have a private life that for whatever reason causes shame

I finished by declaring "You shall know the truth and the truth will make you free", and by encouraging people to slay the giant of lies by embracing truth. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life".

Thanks to Craig and Glyn for representing FIST in participating during the Sunday night service and for adding to the programme with humour and with a serious challenge to "Be first to be last" (or was it last to be first!).

The answer to last week's question: "NONE" It was not Moses, it was Noah!

This week's question: Imagine that you walk into a very dark room. You come across a candle, an oil lamp and an oil heater. You only have one match, so you only have one go. What would YOU light first?

This week's Bible verse: Proverbs 10:2. "ILL-Gotten treasures are of no value, but righteousness delivers from death".

Thursday Night: Last Thursday night we had a great time together as we looked at some of the unfolding events on earth in relation to prophecy and spent quality time in worship and prayer.

FIST: This Thursday night it is the turn of FIST, our men's ministry. I want to encourage you men to get along. As usual it is guaranteed to be a great night. Starts at 7 pm with FOOD, followed by the programme at 7.45. FIST is meeting again on Saturday morning at 9.30 am. There will be more details about this on Thursday night.

Congratulations: To Peter and Sasha on their engagement. We pray for them that God will bless them beyond measure.

I finish off by encouraging you, as Hezeki'ah did, to "come to the House of the Lord" on Sunday. This coming Sunday night we have a special guest speaker, William Wade.

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

Song For Peace

Hi Guys and Girls,

I have attached a song written and sung by a friend from California. He's actually from Adersonstown. His mother lives on the Andy Town Road. His family all live in and around Andersonstown.

I first met Ciaran during my 40 Day Cross Walk. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. He has kept in touch ever since. Last week he wrote to me and said he admires what we are doing as a church and how we are endevouring to reach out to both sides of the community, but he finished off his message by saying, "Y'know, I don't even know if I believe in God - but never mind, I believe in Good".

Today Ciaran sent me the attached song. Please listen to it and pray for Ciaran. I am planning to call in soon to see his mother on the Andersonstown Road.

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

Marriage Conference

Couple's Day

First of all I want to wish those well who are going to the Couple's Day at Green Pastures on Friday 13th. Obviously there are no superstitions regarding the date, or perhaps some think that things can't get much worse anyway! But hey, all joking aside, I trust you all have a great time on Friday and Saturday.

'Cherish and Honour' Marriage Conference

This will be a good follow on to the above Couple's Day and is less expensive, which means more people can get along. The venue will be the Ulster Temple. The main speakers will be Roger and Laureen Traver who have travelled across the world for years speaking in many churches on the subject of relationships and marriage. They are from Colorado Springs. They will be joined by Tim and Meg Britton, also from Colorado Springs and are very good friends of ours.

Because of my contacts I have helped to set this up, but thought it best that it be hosted in a larger church and I appreciate David Hamilton being willing to host it at the Ulster Temple. However, I now want to begin to encourage support from New Life.

The dates are: Friday night 24 April and Saturday 25 April.

The cost is:     £20 per couple (that's for nathin!)

We need 50 couples to cover the costs. It would be great if 15 - 20 couples from New Life signed up for this weekend of excellent teaching and encouragement. This is for all couples, married or thinking about marriage.

This is another effort on our part as a church to provide you with teaching and resources that is helpful and practical. I can now only encourage you to do your part by making sure you take hold of this opportunity. You can begin to sign up by replying to this email.

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

Weekly Contact 9 Feb 2009

David the Psalmist and King of Israel was referred to as "A man after God's own heart". One of the things he said was, "I was glad when they said unto me, let us go to the house of the Lord".

There is something about getting up and going to the House of the Lord where we meet with other believers to worship together and to study the Word of God together. The people of God are always encouraged to come together, not fragment. It was encouraging once again to see people coming together yesterday; coming together from different circumstances; coming together from different locations; coming together with different problems; coming together with different likes and dislikes, but coming together nonetheless. I want to think you for doing so.

Sunday morning: It goes without saying that once again we had another awesome time of worship, both am and pm (at least that's my opinion, as I'm sure it is of others). This was followed by an awesome time of teaching, both am and pm (which again is my opinion, as I'm sure it is of others).

The message I brought on Sunday morning was "What happens when God says "No"?" Our reading was Acts 16:6-10. The main points of the message were:

Some people think that God has given us a blank cheque, but I showed that God answers prayer only on the basis of Faith, Relationship, and Agreement. That is faith in God and His Word; Relationship with God and with each other - that is a good relationship, for "If we regard iniquity in our hearts, he will not hear us"; and agreement or alignment with the will and purposes of God.

Even when we use all the right words, and come to God with the right attitude, and we really believe in what we are praying for, the fact is - sometimes God still says no! But how do we react when God says "No"? How do we react when we don't get our way? That's when, for some, the tantrums, the huffing and puffing, and the rebellion begins.

We saw that Paul had good reason to want to go into Asia Minor and into Bithynia with the Gospel, but God said "No". So what did Paul do? He submitted to the purposes of God. He could do so because his initial prayer of commitment to Christ was so different from ours. Our prayer was all about what we wanted Jesus to do for us, and most people go through their Christian lives with this same attitude of what we want Jesus to do for us or what we want the church to do for us, but Paul's prayer was "Lord, what do you want me to do". His prayer was all about what Jesus wanted him to do and he continued to live by this principle.

I finished by highlighting Jer. 23:21 "I did not send the prophets, yet they ran". How sad that people run to places where God has never sent them, and when they do so, those who follow them will likewise go where God has not sent.

Sunday night: The message was "Facing the Giant of Accusation". Reading Rom. 8:31-39. Thanks to Big Alan Murph for his impromptu help! In this message we saw that no one has a right to accuse, for it is God who justifies and it is Christ who died and rose again for the sins of the world. We saw that the main accuser is identified as Satan in Rev.12:9-10; and we looked at how he accused Job.

We saw that sometimes our conscience accuses us and that sometimes the Holy Spirit convicts us, but when the Holy Spirit convicts us (He does not accuse) the purpose is not to condemn, but to bring us to repentance. We finished by looking at Jesus who, though sinless, was accused of blasphemy by the Jewish authorities and accused of rebellion by the Roman authorities. Yet having done so, he accuses no one, for he did not come into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved.

Thursday Night: Great report on the Virtuous Women event last Thursday night and on the visit of Dr. Stephen Rogers. This coming Thursday night will be ADVANCE with the focus being on PRAYER. Starts at 7.45.

Picture Caption Challenge: With all the votes in and counted the winner is "I AM ONLY JOKING JACK, IT'S NOT THE CHURCH'S FAULT" The only problem is I cannot remember who submitted this! Let's see if whoever it was can stay humble!

The answer to last week's question: "30 divided by half plus 10 = 70.

This week's question is a Bible question: How many of each kind of CLEAN animal did Moses bring into the ark?

This week's Bible verse: Proverbs 9:12. "If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer."

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

Weekly Contact 2 Feb 2009

Sunday 1 February was a good start to the second month of 2009. Thanks to those who joined with us; especially those who were not only with us in spirit, but were also with us in body. Having both body and spirit in church together is so much better.

Sunday morning message: "Seeking to live on the Spirit Level". Here I showed that the Holy Spirit operates on different levels as follows:

1. He operates on "Our Level", but he comes to our level for the purpose of lifting us to his level.
2. He operates on the "Physical Level" = Creation, where the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the deep to bring order and structure to the physical universe; Moses at the Red Sea; Joshua at the River Jordan; Jesus and his miracles etc.
3. He operates on the "Spiritual Level", by communicating through the teaching of Moses; the Prophets; Psalms; Jesus etc.
4. He operates on the "Moral Level" where right is always right and where wrong never becomes right.

I finished by showing that the Holy Spirit wants to operate on these levels in our lives and in the life of the church.

Sunday night: Thanks to JC's for their presentations that added to the service and also added to the message, which was "Facing the Giant of Rejection". In this I showed that we have all faced this giant (perhaps several times in our lives) at school; work; community etc. I made the following points:

1. Church is a place where no one should feel rejected.
2. The problem is not so much in facing the giant; the problem is in how you face the giant. David and King Saul faced the same giant (Goliath), but they both responded differently.
3. We looked at some who had been or who at least felt they had been rejected.
4. The way to slay the giant of rejection is to embrace the spirit of acceptance.
5. I finished by speaking about Jesus who was chosen by God, but was rejected by men.

Virtuous Women: This coming Thursday night beginning at 7 pm with some food and fellowship followed by guest speaker Stephen Rogers who is a qualified Doctor and a Pastor. He will be addressing the subject of stress. Come on ahead ladies, you need to get out to this!

Last week's challenge: was a competition to see who can come up with the funniest caption for the following picture: Several people did respond. So I have added the top 6 captions, but rather than me decide which one should win I thought I would put it to you to vote. So why not put an X after the one you think should win and send it back to me. Do not vote for your own!
