Men's Night Out

This coming Friday night we are going to see the new TRANSFORMERS movie! Tell your wife and kids we're going to watch Bourne the Ultimate Ultimatum or Godfather 1V or something like that. Don't tell them we're going to watch Transformers.

Anyway, we are meeting at 6.30 sharp at the Odeon in the Victoria Centre to make sure we get tickets. We will grab something to eat before the movie Godfather 1V (wink, wink!) that starts at 7.50 pm. It lasts for almost 3 hours with adverts etc. You can buy a little transformer, I mean a gun, on the way out!

If you cannot make it for 6.30 try to get top the Odeon way before 7.50 to make sure you get a ticket. If you know you are
allowed to go, send me a quick reply to say "Count me in!" Car park is £2.50 for the night. You want to arrange to travel in packed cars!

Weekly Contact 29 June 2009

Was yesterday another great day at church or what! Thank God for the sense of excitement among us and for the very real sense of God's presence. There is a greater openness in our worship and a greater openness to hear and receive God's Word. Something is stirring!

Sunday Morning: Thanks to Piotr (Peter) Spasowski, and Ella his interpreter, for bringing a challenging word. Piotr's message underlined the fact that we are:

"God's Children", and that with this comes responsibility and accountability. As a father desires that his children would carry his name with honour, so God desires that we carry his name with honour, because people see God as they see us.

God is Holy. For this reason God requires holiness from us. Christian holiness is nothing to do with how we dress, but with how we live. It's about our actions and deeds in the sight of our neighbours; in church; but also in the home where we are better known. We are not called to 'do as the Romans do' or to 'crow as the crows crow' (Polish saying), but we are called to be Ambassadors of Christ (where'd you hear that before?). We are Royal Children who are to carry the family name with honour.

We are 'Temples of the Holy Spirit' and as such should honour God with our bodies, which is more than raising our hands in worship, but is about being salt and light by our deeds and by our 'right living', that is righteous living. Our deeds are not an attempt to become Children of God, but our deeds are the fruit of who we are in Christ. It is difficult for people to see we are Christians if our lives and actions do not match. Second Century Christians were referred to as "other Christ's" because they so reflected him. The right to belong to God's family carries responsibility and accountability.

Sunday night: Jonathan brought a word on "FIRE" and did so with fire in his heart and fire in his presentation. There were not many notes to take as much of what he shared was reading several Bible verses and comments as he went along. However, he began by showing there is a Fire of Judgement for all who reject Christ and reject the ways of God, but his main message was not so much on this, but focused more on the Fire of God as follows:

The Fire of God in the Old Testament: God often showed himself to the earth through fire; fire that revealed his power, authority and holiness. He led the People of Israel by a Pillar of Fire at night; he revealed himself to Moses at the burning bush in the desert; he answered Elijah by fire on the mountain. (These show the fire of God's presence: Fire in the midst of Darkness; Fire in the midst of the Desert; Fire in the midst of Danger).

The Fire of God in the New Testament: John the Baptist said of Jesus the Messiah (the Christ) "He will baptise with the Holy Spirit and with Fire". In Acts 2 the Holy Spirit came with Fire on all who had gathered in the Upper Room (Top House). As fire is used to refine and purify silver and gold, so the Fire of God refines and purifies us to enable us to stand in his presence.

The Fire of God in us: As animal sacrifices were made in the Old Testament and burned continually, we are called upon in the New Testament to offer ourselves as living sacrifices unto God which is our reasonable act of worship. The fire of God within us is like fire in our bones that will not be contained or held back.

The day ended with two young men from the Falls committing their lives to Christ and with several people coming to the front and kneeling in the presence of God. One of these was one of the young men who had just given his life to Christ. Surely this, and the things of this day and of other recent days, is an amazing sign of greater things to come! Come on! Let's get excited about what God is doing among us. And let's not wait until we read about it in an email; let's be there and be part of it.

Team Leaders Meeting: We are expecting Team Leaders and their Teams to meet with us this coming Thursday at 7.30. If you are UNABLE to make it along (in other words if you're planning on going to heaven), please let us know.

Building Fund: Next Sunday morning I am planning on presenting a full update on where we're at and of possible advances in the coming weeks.

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

Special Update

This is directly from me to you and is worth reading:

Do you ever have one of those nights; you look back on it and you think, "That was such a good night, that it needs to be put down in print". Well, last night was one of those nights!

Friday night is normally "Scrabble night" when I usually beat the ______ out of my worthy opponents. But a few weeks ago I decided to reach out again to our friends in the Falls community. Almost immediately there were contacts from some of our friends that totally confirmed the time was right.

We met in Eddy and Gerard's home and had a great chat with Eddy, Gerrard, Noel, Joanie, Mary Lou, Noreen and Lonzi. We also met with Denise and the baby. Anyway, we agreed to meet every two weeks on Friday nights (with Scrabble on the other nights!). We met in Eddy and Gerard's home for the first of these, which was last week. It was a great start. Colin Morrison formally got things off quite well as he shared his testimony. That guy was a gangster if ever there was one! We finished off by reading around the room from John chapter 1 and we prayed for some needs before having tea.

But what about last night? Well, last night we were at Noreen's home (Noreen is Noleen's mum). I had Boneyard along to share his testimony (if you think Colin was a gangster!!!). Well there we were - Colin & Carole, James Scott, Boneyard, Eddy & Gerrard, Gareth & Mary Lou, Noreen, and Joanie's daughter (Joanie and Noel were at a wedding). We were getting ready to start when 5 young men turned up at a wall just across the street. They had drink with them. Someone in the home passed a comment about them and it was suggested we should invite them in. Gareth went out to speak with them, when two police cars pulled into the street and stopped alongside the young men. I watched the police take the drink off the young men and was concerned that it could lead to something nasty. So I decided to intervene.

I went across the street and spoke to one of the officers who had a bottle of cider in his hand (it wasn't his; it belonged to one of the young men!). I explained who I was and where I was from and I asked if he would permit me to take the drink and to bring the young men off the street and into the home for an hour or so. The police officer was not interested. He kept insisting the young men should not be drinking in the street etc etc. I got nowhere with him.

Another officer had been standing right in the middle of the five young men, who were all about 17 - 19. He had a bag of drink (cider) in his hand and was speaking quite firmly with them. His last words to them were, "If you want to claim your drink, just come round to the police station". As he was about to get into the police car I spoke with him saying the same thing I had said to the previous officer. His first response was "No". But I insisted by saying, "How many pastors are there from the Shankill Road working in these streets?" (Springfield and Falls), and I said "Would it not better to get these young off the street for an hour or so than to leave them here angry?" I then said to him, "Work with me on this, and help me to work with these young men". He took one more look into my eyes, and then handed me the bag of drink. He then put my name and the name of the church into his little black book, which is not the first time I've had my name put in a little black book whether it's a police one or a paramilitary one!

With the bag of cider now firmly in my hand I then turned to the first officer I had spoken to and reached out my hand for the bottle of cider that was still in his hand (although it looked a little emptier!). He turned away with it and said "It's open; you can't have this one". The other officer gave him one stern look and said, "Give it to him". So he handed it to me!

By this time the street was well filled with onlookers. I walked across the street with a bag and a bottle of cider in my hands and with 5 young men behind me and into the home across the street. They came in and sat down and with the greatest respect they listened as we prayed and explained who we were and where we were from, and as Boneyard (ex-UVF, ex-prisoner and ex-gangster) shared his story. They then listened to a brief explanation of the Gospel and as we prayed at the end. They sat afterwards for a while and talked about the church saying they would love to come along. We have arranged to pick them up at the same spot for church on Sunday night along with others who were in the home. It truly was a great night.

The door is wide open. I want to thank Eddy and Mary for their part in this and for others from New Life who join with us. We are not now looking for others from the church to join with us. Please leave it to me to invite people whenever I think it's appropriate, but please pray with us as we continue to take this outreach forward.

We finished before 10 pm. After this I went to meet with one person and spent the next two hours with him regarding a very special need. I am only adding this to let you know that Jack's life is NOT about Scrabble on Friday nights, but is about people, whether it's a crowd or an individual. And just in case someone is reading this and is thinking that Jack doesn't spend two hours with me; believe me, I will spend two hours with anyone who shows they are serious about moving on in God, and not just wanting to take up two hours of Jack's time. There is a difference! How was your Friday night?

Don't forget tomorrow morning we have Polish Pastor Peter Spasowski speaking.

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

Weekly Contact Monday 22 June 2009

Fathers' Days was a 'One Service Day' at New Life. Thanks to FIST team for a great service and to Craig Seawright for a great word. We had a really good turn out and no one could have failed to have gotten something from the service, be it the worship or the Word.

Craig Seawright's message, the content and the passion by which it was delivered, touched all our hearts. He brought a special Fathers' Day message based on Psalm 127:1 "Unless the Lord builds a house, its builders labour in vain".

In this message he showed us that children are like arrows with destiny, carrying God's dreams with potential to change the world, but it is our responsibility (especially as fathers) to give direction to these arrows (our children).

The important thing is where you launch the arrow from. Our finish line is their starting point. In other words, where we finish is where they start off. The giants we don't fight, they will fight. The things we fail to finish, they will have to finish. But the devil is trying to shut down God's purposes by shutting down the fathers. He shuts down the fathers by shutting down their dreams. In Gen. 11 it was Terah's dream to go to Canaan, but he got distracted and went to Haran where he settled. Many years later his son Abraham went to Canaan. Abraham went where his father Terah should have gone.

It's hard to pursue the dream that God gives. Sometimes we want to bow out and give up on the dream, because we listen to the lies of the devil. But it's okay to dream, because God has a dream for each person; and has a dream for the church. Don't give up on your dream... Thanks Craig.

Abseil at the Europa: I think I am right in saying that Europa is seen as the goddess of Europe. She was one of the loves of Zeus and was depicted as riding on the back of a white bull. Today she is seen as riding the beast of the European Community, once called the European Common Market. Anyway, today, those who abseiled down from the roof of the Europa Hotel symbolically conquered the goddess of Europe! Well done! And well done for doing what you did and for raising finances for the building fund. Would you please make sure you get your sponsor money to Jonathan ASAP so we know what was brought in. Thanks to those who did the abseil and to those who sponsored.

What's on this week? Tuesday night Connect Group at our home at 7.30 pm; Prayer Meeting at the new building on Thursday night at 7.45 pm (we're back to the normal 8! unless that was a 'one of'!); Friday night Connect Group in west Belfast (Springfield Road).

Next Sunday: 11 am Pastor Piotr (Peter) Spasowski from Poland will be speaking. Your support would be truly welcome, especially at a time when racism is raising its ugly head in Belfast.

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

Weekly Contact Monday 15 June 2009

I wonder what your lasting memory of yesterday will be! For me it was the awesome collective worship experience that totally opened us up to the Word of God. The moment we began to sing our hearts were immediately connected in a united assault on heaven's throne room. There came a point yesterday morning where it seemed like Top House became a meeting place for heaven and earth and when people began to literally embrace the very presence of God. This was followed with the same depth and excitement in worship during the evening service. However, we need to keep in mind that while we thank God for times like these, our growth and development as Christians, and as a church, should be more dependent on what we are taught rather than what we experience.

Sunday morning: This was one of those mornings when Gemma felt it was inappropriate to give the announcements and when it became difficult to "close the service" and when the Word of God was eagerly and well received. I continued to speak on "Walking with the Spirit", and began by making the point that "You cannot truly and fully walk with the Spirit if you have not truly and fully received him".

Our reading was Luke 11:9-13 where we saw that the asking, seeking and knocking is in relation to the Holy Spirit, and that we are therefore encouraged as Christians to pursue and desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit. But this raises the question: "Did I not receive the Holy Spirit when I became a Christian?". I sought to answer this question by asking and answering two other questions:

1) Was Joel's prophecy regarding the Holy Spirit fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost? We saw clearly that it was, when the Holy Spirit for the first time was poured upon "all people"; i.e. all who had gathered in the Upper Room (Top House) as opposed to individual priests; prophets; kings and judges.

2) Are there 2 experiences of the Holy Spirit? We saw clearly that there are. Our first experience of the Holy Spirit is when we became Christians (John 3:5-6; Rom. 8:9). The second experience is the fulfilment of what Jesus said in John 7:37-39, "Whoever believes in me, streams of living water will flow from within him. By this he meant the Spirit...". We saw that the disciples were saved and on their way to heaven "before" they were filled with the Holy Spirit; as were the new coverts in Samaria (Acts 8); as was Saul of Tarsus (Acts 9); as were the Ephesian Christians who were met by Paul (Acts 19). We also saw that when Paul wrote to the Ephesians he acknowledged they were "sealed" (1:13); "seated with Christ" (2:6); "saved by grace" (2:8,9); and were "God's workmanship" (2:10); yet he still felt the need to encourage them to "be filled with the Holy Spirit" (5:18).

Although nothing else was planned, we finished off with an extended time of worship and praying for those who came forward.

Sunday night: Well!!! Let's stay focused here. The place was as packed as I've seen it in a long time. Were people blessed? Yes. Were people ministered to? Yes. Were people encouraged? Yes. Did people get saved? Yes. Did people get healed? Some say they were. Several people commented to me at the end of the night saying "this was a great day". And it was!

If I was to sum up Bree Keyton's message to the church it would be "stop being crying wimps and rise up to the challenge of being Davids in the face giants". Forget the sword; forget Peru; forget the snake; but do not forget God's challenge to be a David against the giants of fear, despair, poverty, and sickness etc.

Let's put it into perspective: I've been reading stories of Jesus physically appearing to Muslims in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and other places and of these same people becoming Christians as a result. The problem for me is not the experiences that people have, but our willingness and our ability to believe the "personalised stories" when we hear them. I think we can all tell more stories than we dare. I personally like what the Bible says about Mary the mother of Jesus, "she hid these things in her heart". Sometimes it's best to hide things in our hearts!

Thursday Night Prayer: Don't forget this coming Thursday night at 7.45 we are having a special time of prayer for the church and the way forward. It's one thing to talk to each other about things; it's another thing to talk to God about things!

Next Sunday is Father's Day: We are only having ONE service on Sunday at 11 am. This will be taken by FIST. Craig Seawright will be speaking. Don't forget the offering will be our first special building fund offering. To make it special we should seek to commit over and above what we normally give to the church.

Barbeque: As there is no evening service we have opened up our home for a barbeque from 5 pm onwards (changed from 4 pm). Please note, as announced on Sunday, we are not providing the food, you are! Bring you own food to barbeque for you and your family (including drinks - bring a can or a bottle). We will have two barbeques burning, so you can go right ahead and cook your own food. We will have a shed at the bottom of the garden where you can put your children until it's time to leave, or if it's a nice day we will give you some rope so you can tie them to the fence!

Sponsored Abseil: There are 30 people signed up for this. There is still time for others to step up! Please make sure that you sponsor someone. Each person needs to raise £30 to cover the cost of the abseil. Anything raised over this will be donated to the building fund. Kathleen and I are sponsoring £50 each (one of us to Deborah and one to Gemma because the bank will double theirs). I only mention this by way of example.

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

Bree Keyton

Thanks to all those who came out to AVANCE last night. There was a good turn out, although we did miss several people, especially "team members". However, it was a great night. Several people spoke to me afterwards about how much they enjoyed the event.

Bree shared some stories about her ministry that has taken her to some very strange and remote places including the Amazon and the Congo. She shared something of her testimony and how God has preserved her life and how he continues to lead her. After this, with her trusty sword in her hand, she encouraged us to declare and loose the Word of God; to speak out the written word, the logos of God, until it becomes active in our lives and surrounding circumstances. This was very much in keeping with what I shared last Sunday morning when I said, "The Son of God is mentioned (covertly) in Gen.1:3 as the logos - the spoken and declared creative Word of God". Bree also spoke directly into some people's lives and prayed healing over the church. Three people shared afterwards that God had touched them and brought healing to them.

We look forward to Sunday night when Bree will share the Word of God. Please encourage others to come along and let's pray for and believe God for salvations and healings.

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

Announcement Roast Coffee Co.

This is a very important announcement. Your support would be very much appreciated:

Roast Coffee Shop, 407 Lisburn Road, Belfast.

In July 2006 we sold the above to a husband and wife team. They had been in business before and they ticked all the boxes. However, the sale went through on the basis of an upfront deposit with the balance to be paid at an agreed time later. Failure to pay the balance would mean the business would come back into our hands. The long and short of it is, the balance was not paid. However, besides this, the Roast Coffee Company failed to make other payments to suppliers and landlord etc. The company was finally put into liquidation, which has resulted in us taking it over again. Unfortunately it has been closed for three weeks, but we finally got it open again today.

I have to say that, without a doubt, the Roast is one of the best coffee shops on the Lisburn Road. It has always been frequented by local businesses and especially by churches. Given the fact that it has been closed for three weeks it will take a little while for us to once again build up our clientele. We are hoping to draw back many of our "old customers" and to encourage a new stream of customers to frequent the Roast Coffee Shop.

This is where we need your support. If you are a pastor of a church (or if you can influence your pastor!), could you announce to your people that the Roast Coffee Shop on the Lisburn Road is back in the hands of the Elim Church in Ireland and will be run by Pastor Johnny McKee of New Life City Church. The coffee shop is open every day from 8.30 am - 11 pm for a selection of food, and hot and cold drinks etc. All profits will be going into the church and community work.

Dilemma! The busiest day in the week for Roast has always been a Sunday! The main users are people coming out of church on Sunday mornings and Sunday evenings. We obviously do not want to hinder this ongoing time of fellowship, so we have decided we will open on Sundays, but that all food and drinks will be served on a donation only basis. We would ask people to be aware of the costs and to donate appropriately knowing that access funds will be going to the church and community work. We will review this after 4 weeks.

This is also a great place to meet with visitors for a chat and a coffee. We even have a large office that can be used for Board Meetings. For further information please contact Pastor Johnny McKee at revolutionyouth@btinternet.com or 07968059776.

We would also very much appreciate your prayers.

God bless.

Jack

Weekly Contact 8 June 2009

Good Monday morning New Lifers and friends of New Life. I hope that like me you can look back on Sunday knowing it was another good day at church and that you were able to take something positive from each service.

Sunday morning: I spoke on "Walking with the Spirit". This was a follow on to previous messages, but was more a look at who the Holy Spirit. We looked at His "who-ness" rather than His "what-ness". We saw that the Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity in the order of Redemption/Salvation, but that he is the Second Person of the Trinity in the Order of the Creation Story. In Gen.1 the Father is mentioned in the first verse as God the Creator; that is the Father of Creation; The Holy Spirit is mentioned in verse 2 as the Spirit of of moving upon the face of the deep; The Son is mentioned (covertly) in verse 3 as the logos - the spoken and declared creative Word of God.

It is this Holy Spirit who moved upon the face of the deep who lives with us and is in us (John 14:17). It is this same Holy Spirit who walked with the Old Testament saints; the New Testament saints and with every believer today. If we truly walk with the Holy Spirit his presence will be reflected in our lives, our worship and in our witness. One of my main comments was, "God does not want you to do what you because you're good at what you do, but he wants you to do what you do because what you do comes out of your relationship and your walk with the Holy Spirit".

Sunday night: I brought a message entitled, "Against all the Odds". We all sometimes face situations where the odds are stacked against us. Who would have thought that DJ Benga against the odds would escape prison in the Congo and would finally make it to America where he would become one on the greatest players in the NBA for the LA Lakers.

We looked at how Paul against the odds established a church in Thessalonica within a window of opportunity that remained open to him for only three weeks. His revival meetings led to a major riot and resulted in Paul having to leave sharply after three weeks.

Some think the evidence of God's blessing is to be found in calm waters under a cloudless sky, but that often the reverse is true when in the midst of raging storms you know that if God does not come through for you, you are not going to make it! etc etc... We often find ourselves battling against the odds, but when we finally come through we know it just had to be God!

Quite a number of people indicated their need for prayer as they face situations where they feel the odds are stacked against them. We continue to look to God for each and pray for testimonies of miraculous breakthrough.

         ADVANCE
ADVANCE: This coming Thursday at 7.45 pm sharp. Bree Keyton will be our speaker. Please plan to attend as this promises to be an amazing, and perhaps a life-changing, event. Bree will also be speaking on Sunday night at 6.45 pm.

BATS!

Three pastors were having lunch together.

One said "Ya know, since summer started I've been having trouble with bats in the loft of the church. I've tried everything including noise, spray, and cats, but nothing seems to scare them away".
Another said "Yea, me too. We've got hundreds living in the church attic. I've even had the place fumigated and they just won't go away.

The third said, "We had the same problem at our church, until I baptized all of mine and made them members of the church. I haven't seen one back since" !!!

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday when I will be speaking (a.m.) on "Walking with the Holy Spirit" and (p.m.) "Against all the Odds".

Don't forget Virtuous Women tonight.

Stay focused; stay strong; and keep being a God-influence.

ABSEIL

Regarding the abseil: Even if you are not up for doing this yourself, why not take a sponsor form on behalf of someone you know is doing it. This would be a major contribution from you. Just a thought!!! Jack

Sponsored Abseil

I have attached a Sponsor Form. You can print this out as many times as you want and get cracking right away. Why not get family members and friends to join in. The more the merrier! There will also be sponsor forms available at Top House.

Please let Jonathan know right away if you intend to sign up for this as we need the numbers to confirm the booking. email him at revolutionyouth@btinternet.com

Thanks.

Jack

Encouragement

I should have said, to encourage you, that I received a check today for $3,300, which is about £2,000 from Dennis Goldsworthy's church in San Antonio TX towards the building fund.

So if friends are stepping up, so should we.

Jack

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

As you should already know, our Sunday morning Father's Day Service is being taken by FIST. This is Sunday 21 June. There will be no evening service on that day. However.........

We have just secured a booking for up to 50 to do a sponsored abseil from the top of the Europa Hotel on that same afternoon at 2 pm. Here's the deal: the money raised will go towards the building fund. Each person should target to reach £60 on their sponsor form. £30 of this is to cover the cost for the event. The other £30 will go towards our building fund. This means if 50 do this on the day they will raise £1,500. However, I would encourage you to raise much more than £60 on your form if possible, but don't let this put you off.

If you can get someone to pay the £30 that would be even better (maybe even pay it yourself!) then we could raise £3,000 or more.

Okay, we need you to sign up for it. Please email Jonathan at revolutionyouth@btinternet.com and let him know you want to sign up for this. We need numbers quickly. So don't even think about it. This is open to everyone, although check with Jonathan about possible age restrictions.

Why not invite your friends to get involved? Send them and email or a text and lets see if we can fill the numbers quickly.
